92Keywords：BuddhaImage,Laos,KhmerArt,LuangPrabang,VientianAmongalargeamountofBuddhaimagesinLaos,thereareimagesbelievedtobebroughtfromCambodia.However,itisnotclearwhereandwhentheseBuddhaimagesfoundinVientianeandLuangPrabangweremade.PhaBangBuddhaisoneofthem,whichhasalegendthatitcamefromCambodia,butitisquestionable.Inthisstudy,IwilldiscussaboutartstylesoftheseextantexamplesofBuddhistimagesinordertoestimatetheconstructionsiteanddate,andfurther,todescribeBud-dhist’sculturalexchangeinthisarea.Asaresult,anyhistoricaldocumentdoesn’tmentionPhaBangBuddhaexcepttheLaoschronicleswhichtellthisBuddhaimagecamefromCambodia.However,itwasnotlikelyhappeninthehistoricalcircumstancesofCambodiaatthetime.Ontheotherhand,therearemanysimilaritiesonthedetailsofartstylesbetweenPhaBangBuddhaandthosefoundincentralThailandsuchasLopburi.PhaBangBuddhacouldbemadeinthecentralpartofThailandsuchasLopburiduringthelatterhalfofthe13thcenturytothefirsthalfofthe14thcentury.OtherextantKhmerstyleBuddhaimagesinVientianeandLuangPrabangcouldberoughlydividedintothreegroups.ThefirstonehasartstylesincommonwiththosefromLopburiandaban-donedBuddhaimagesfromBanteayKdei,andcouldbebuiltinthemid-13thcenturytothemid-14thcentury.However,manyofthemshowslocalappearancesthatmainlycouldbetheinfluenceoftheDvaravatistyleinnortheasternThailand,andwereprobablyproducedinnortheasternThailandsuchasPhimaiorcentralThailand.Thistypeisthesecondgroupandcouldbedatedalsobetweenlatterhalfofthe13thcenturytothefirsthalfof14thcentury.ThethirdgrouphasnorelationswithKhmerartexceptborrowingcrownandNagahood.Fromthediscussionabove,theseBuddhaimagesstronglyindicatethatitispossibleinVientianetheKhmerpowerwasmaintainedevenaftertheBayonperiodandtheyhadrelationshiptocentralandthenortheasternThailand,andtheexchangeofBuddhismwashappenduringthelatterhalfofthe13thcenturytothemiddleofthe14thcentury.Professor,SiamUniversityDirector,THAI-JAPANCULTURALSTUDYCENTERTAKATA TomohitoKhmer style Buddha images in Laos and related historical records
